NURS 142 Fundamental Nursing Concepts
This course provides an introduction to the profession of nursing. Fundamental concepts, skills, and professional behaviors necessary for nursing practice will be examined. Through structured learning activities students acquire theoretical knowledge and develop competencies required to provide safe, patient-centered care for older adults. Clinical, skills laboratory, and simulation experiences will supplement didactic learning methods.
Prerequisite
Formal admission into the associate degree Nursing program or Practical Nurse certificate program;
BIOL 107,
BIOL 203,
CHEM 103, and MATH 132, 138 or higher
Hours Weekly
4 hours theory, 9 hours clinical
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate caring behaviors while delivering patient-centered care to older adults.
- Identify appropriate teaching strategies for older adults to facilitate optimum functioning.
- Examine differences in roles, education, and practice of interprofessional team members.
- Practice communication techniques using professional terminology when interacting with peers, patients, and members of the interprofessional team.
- Demonstrate professional behaviors and accountability while providing safe nursing care.
- Perform fundamental nursing skills according to standards of practice, policies, and procedures.
- Use the nursing process as the framework for delivery of nursing care.
- Explain the process of evidence-based nursing practice.
