MUSA 160 Lyric Diction I - Italian-Latin

Previously MUSC 126. The first in a series of courses designed for singers and choral conductors who wish to improve their linguistic skills and knowledge of Italian/Latin, as applied through the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), as well as expanding their knowledge of standard vocal repertoire.

Course Objectives

  1. Recognize and write IPA symbols.
  2. Transcribe poetic texts.
  3. Place linguistic stress inflection.
  4. Pronounce, articulate, and place vowels and consonants.
  5. Apply gained knowledge of IPA to vocal repertoire.
  6. Differentiate between spoken vernacular and classically sung articulations.
  7. Demonstrate, through performance, a mastery of acquired skills.
