MUSA 106 Tunes in 'toons: Classical Music in Cartoons and Animation

Previously MUSC 138. Open to all interested students, this course provides an introduction to classical music through cartoons. Emphasis will be given to specific genres of classical music, musical historical periods, the connection of classical music to other arts, and aesthetics. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify specific classical composers and explain their importance from a global and historical perspective, recognize and define specific genres of classical music, and write and speak clearly about the aesthetics and humanism of classical music. This course will enhance the students' appreciation of classical music in a unique and memorable way.

Course Objectives

  1. Recognize and apply basic music terminology in class discussions, presentations, and
    written reviews.
  2. Identify techniques for recognition of stylistic traits and characteristics of each historical
    music period.
  3. Classify specific classical music by historical music period.
  4. Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative and humanistic
    expression with social and cultural contexts by explaining specific classical composers’
    importance and influence from global, creative, cultural, and historical perspectives.
  5. Recognize and define specific genres of classical music.
  6. Examine composers’ motivations and inspirations for composing the works studied in class,
    and explain their creative process.
  7. Analyze, discuss, and summarize how classical music in cartoons and animations affects
    the setting, the action, and the overall atmosphere.
  8. Compare and relate examples of classical music in cartoons or animations to classical
    performances of the same works.
  9. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary
    issues of aesthetics and creativity in classical music.
  10. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into the analysis/interpretation of a piece
    of classical music, creating an aural and visual presentation using Windows Movie Maker,
    iMovie, and/or Prezi.
  11. Consider the role of classical music as interpreted through cartoons by assessing, reflecting
    on, and critically analyzing one’s own creative process, as well as that of others.
