MUSA 141 Sound Creation in Music

Previously MUSC 209. Students will learn how to use basic sound creation tools like synthesizers, and will learn the different techniques used to shape and manipulate sound. The class will be held in a computer lab, and coursework will be hands-on and project-based. Current commercial and artistic uses of electronic music and sound will be analyzed and critical listening skills developed. Creativity and compositional techniques will be discussed along with the concerns of professional working musicians and composers. Students will begin the process of creating their own palette of creation techniques and experiences in a supportive environment. Students will learn techniques of creative expression, and will discuss and describe their original works. Students are expected to have a basic working knowledge of music theory and should be able to read music.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply theories and concepts related to creativity and invention by demonstrating
    knowledge of electronic instruments and computer-based music and sound creation tools
    and techniques.
  2. Utilize a working knowledge of digital workstation hardware, software, and procedures.
  3. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods
    by documenting experimentation with music and sound creation technology and techniques.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of uses of music and sound in commercial industry and the arts,
    and the fundamental role technology plays.
  5. Discuss topics using vocabulary and concepts from the music and sound creation field.
  6. Identify technology-based music creation and presentation techniques through listening and
    research.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to find and use Internet-based music and sound creation tools.
  8. Demonstrate awareness of the processes involved in designing music and sound to fit
    specific situations.
  9. Pose and address questions related to creative expression by employing creativity in the
    production of sound and music projects.
  10. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of music in illuminating the human condition
    by discussing with fellow students or employers one’s original works of music and sound, the
    technological processes employed, and one’s aesthetic approach.
