MUSA 140 Introduction to Music Technology and Entrepreneurship

Previously MUSC 139. This course is an introduction to the terminology, concepts, and basic skills needed to work with computer-based music applications and basic MIDI (synthesizer) technology used in core music courses. The order in which these projects are presented is intended to correspond to curricula in the music department, although non-music major students may enroll in this course. The course is designed to give students a background that will allow them to more easily incorporate additional technology which they will find in the world of music and music education. The course also introduces the basic technology that students need to pursue a career in music. Students will study diverse ways of creating income through musical projects.

Course Objectives

  1. Work comfortably with specific computer applications that will enhance students’ efforts in
    their core music courses.
  2. Create computer-generated notation using desktop publishing music software.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic techniques of music file management and
    editing on the computer.
  4. Identify and apply theories and concepts related to creativity and invention by arranging and
    composing music using available music software.
  5. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods,
    using the sound synthesis technologies of commonly available commercial synthesizers.
  6. Pose and address questions related to creative expression throughout the process of
    creating an effective internet presence through website creation and social media.
  7. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of music in illuminating the human condition
    by incorporating technology found in the world of music and music education into music
    compositions.
  8. Write a professional music resume.
  9. Demonstrate basic principles of search engine optimization.
  10. Discuss diverse methods of creating revenue with music in digital and non-digital
    environments.
