FILM 240 Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Films
This course is an interdisciplinary study of the history of gay, lesbian, and transgender issues in film. Using lecture, interactive discussion, guest speakers, readings and multimedia, this course aims to stimulate critical thinking about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender or intersex issues in the framework of American culture, ethics and public interest. Major films and significant directors will be covered.

Course Objectives
- Review the history of gay, lesbian, and transgender films from the 1900s to the present day.
- Discuss the difference between gender roles and gender identities.
- Distinguish different cinematic styles and genres used between Hollywood and foreign cinemas using
gay, lesbian, and transgender characters as subject matter. - Compare and contrast key elements of films dealing with the topic of gender roles and gender identities
in terms of genre, ideology and theory. - Analyze classic gay/lesbian/transgender films and place them in their cultural settings.
- Review the role of the media in films dealing with gay, lesbian, transgender, multi-gender, or asexual
characters. - Analyze the themes of persecution, activism and diversity within the gay and lesbian community as they
have been addressed in film.
