FILM 228 Spanish Film
As a historical survey of Spanish cinema, this course also considers the overall history and culture of Spain from the mid-20th century through to the present, and the status of the Spanish film industry as it has been affected by the country’s political climate. The course will focus on films made in the last few decades and major contemporary directors such as Carlos Saura and Pedro Almodovar.

Course Objectives
- Develop a general knowledge of Spanish film history.
- Identify running themes in Spanish films.
- Discuss the “auteur” theory of the cinema as it relates to Spanish directors.
- Analyze the close connection between history, culture, and cinema in Spain.
- Distinguish different cinematic styles and genres based on the cultural models created throughout Spanish history.
- Discuss the styles of the most important and influential Spanish directors.
- Consider family life, cultural mores, religion, art, and literature as depicted in Spanish films.
- Identify ethical issues arising from cross-cultural study.
- Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of aesthetics, creativity, humanism, meaning, and/or invention in Spanish film.
- Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods by distinguishing different cinematic styles and genres based on the cultural models created throughout Spanish history.
- Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative and humanistic expression with social and cultural contexts in Spanish film.
- Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of Spanish cinema in illuminating the human condition and search for meaning.
