FILM 205 Italian Film
This course is a study of contemporary Italian society and culture through the medium of film. The aim of the course is to show the interconnection between artistic expression and the historical, social, and cultural realities of Italy from 1945 to the present. Special emphasis will be on the movement of Italian neorealism and post-neorealism with reference to some major Italian writers (Verga, Pirandello, Moravia, C. Levi, etc.) and their influential works.

Course Objectives
- Engage in a cinematic exploration of various worldviews as it relates to Italian cinema.
- Describe Italian history, cultures, values, and aesthetics of self and others through an exploration of cultural mores, family life, religion, art, and literature as depicted in Italian film.
- Identify and explain multiple perspectives when exploring subjects within Italian culture.
- Analyze global events and issues and describe the interconnection between artistic expression and the historical and cultural realities of Italy from economic, political, environmental, aesthetic, or social perspectives.
- Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of aesthetics, creativity, humanism, meaning, and/or invention in Italian film.
- Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods by distinguishing different cinematic styles and genres based on the cultural models created throughout Italian history.
- Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative and humanistic expression with social and cultural contexts in Italian film, especially in the movements of Italian neorealism and post-neorealism.
- Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of Italian cinema in illuminating the human condition and search for meaning.
- Identify ethical issues arising from cross-cultural study of Italy.
