HEED-150 Women's Health

This course will introduce students to a variety of women's health issues as well as the barriers faced by women striving to achieve a healthful lifestyle. Students will examine topics including: female sexual health and reproduction, exercise and eating behaviors, substance abuse, mental health and stress, and violence against women. This course is designed to support students in their personal exploration of attitudes, knowledge, and values related to women's health and to assist them as they analyze their personal health behaviors.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Summarize and discuss the current state of contemporary women’s health and identify the
    most important events in history, society, culture and politics, and how these events have
    influenced the current issues/problems affecting women’s health.
  2. 2. Compare male and female morbidity and mortality for major chronic diseases and evaluate
    causes for the disparities.
  3. 3. Interpret concepts related to the prevention of chronic disease, including nutrition, exercise,
    weight management, stress, alcohol, and other drug use.
  4. 4. Identify terminology and apply concepts related to contraception, female sexual anatomy,
    menstruation, menopause, sexual behavior, and STIs.
  5. 5. Examine current issues surrounding pregnancy and childbirth.
  6. 6. Describe major issues in mental health as they relate specifically to women.
  7. 7. Analyze the media and its influence on societal norms and how they affect body image and
    eating disorders in women.
  8. 8. Summarize problems related to issues of violence, abuse, and harassment and establish a
    position on how and to what degree media/culture influences the prevalence of violence
    against women in contemporary society.
  9. 9. Identify and evaluate evidence delineating an issue or topic of concern for the health of
    women, and apply the information to solve the problem.
