HEED-130 Human Sexuality

Through this introduction to the field of human sexuality, students will be able to recall and describe historical and current research knowledge related to physiological, psychological, anthropological, and sociological aspects of human sexuality across the life span. Students will discuss and evaluate their own beliefs and values relevant to the topics of various types of sexual behavior, sexual problems, and their treatments. In addition, students will be able to describe important legal and ethical sexual issues.

Course Objectives

1. Identify the location and function of the major components of both the female and male sexual
systems and reproductive systems distinguish the physiological responses that take place in both
men and women during the different phases of the human sexual response cycle.
2. Examine the major issues involving human reproduction and birthing distinguish between the
various types of birth control methods in terms of the way in which they work and the advantages
and disadvantages of each.
3. Identify the factors prenatally through puberty that affect the development of adult genderidentity/roles
and describe the ways males in females in our society tend to approach human
sexuality differently.
4. Identify different theories of psychosexual development and describe ways in which parents can
help their children develop positive sexual attitudes.
5. Explain the factors which facilitate good communication between sexual partners including the
importance of touch.
6. Examine different moral principles and values affecting sexuality as they relate to different
religious and ethical traditions as well as such factors as love, honesty and non-coerciveness.
7. Explore social attitudes toward masturbation and identify statements which contain accurate facts
about masturbation.
8. Identify characteristics of sexual intercourse and describe factors which will help establish and
maintain a good sexual relationship with a long-term partner.
9. Examine factors which affect a person's sexual orientation, identify statements which contain
accurate facts about gays and lesbians and describe problems which they have in our society
including homophobia.
10. Identify definitions and characteristics of different types of sexual variants.
11. Describe different types of sexual abuse including sexual harassment, rape, child sexual abuse and
analyze ways in which society can reduce these problems.
12. Identify the symptoms, long term effects, and diagnosis and treatment of different sexually
transmitted diseases including AIDS and explain "safer sex" practices which can reduce the
spread of these diseases.
13. Examine legal issues affecting human sexuality including prostitution and pornography.
14. Analyze ways in which society can help persons be more informed about human sexuality and
develop sex positive attitudes.
