PHY 142 Life in the Universe
A study of the physical and biological universe, including modern scientific theories of cosmic, planetary, and biological origins, formation, and evolution. This interdisciplinary course examines the possibility of life beyond Earth through the lens of physics and astronomy, exploring topics including planetary formation, stellar evolution, spectroscopy, extremophile biology, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Emphasis is placed on the nature of science and scientific methodology, quantitative reasoning, and understanding humanity's place in the cosmic perspective. Students will participate in significant scientific inquiry through laboratory activities and data analysis.
