ENES 140 Mechanics of Materials
The student will acquire a knowledge of the distortion of engineering materials in relation to changes in stress or temperature. The geometry of internal strain and external displacement will be studied. Applications will be presented and discussed which cover beams, columns, shafts, tanks, and other structural machine and vehicle members.
Hours Weekly
2 hours lecture, 2 hours recitation weekly
Course Objectives
- Explain material behavior in terms of mechanical properties, stress and strain at a point, and the stress-strain diagram.
- Compute stress in axial rods, torsional shafts, beams, and thin-walled pressure vessels.
- Compute strain and deflection of axial rods, torsional shafts, and beams.
- Solve for unknown reaction forces in statically indeterminate structures.
- Determine the state of stress at a point in a member subject to combined loading and apply planar stress transformations.
- Apply multiple failure theories in the design and analysis of structural members.
- Analyze the stability of columns under different support conditions.
- Analyze loaded structural members with stress concentrations.
