ENES 100 Introduction to Engineering Design
Students are introduced to the engineering design process by working in teams on multiple design projects. Students will design and build a device, product, or system that satisfies specified functional and performance requirements. The design projects involve a variety of topics from multiple engineering disciplines, technology, and the sciences. Students will apply concepts from mechanics, fluids, energy transfer, thermodynamics, basic circuit theory, biology, and chemistry. Project tasks will require students to learn a variety of engineering skills and tools, including computer-aided design (CAD), basic electronics, data collection and analysis, spreadsheets, lab bench automation software, and computer programming.
Hours Weekly
2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab, 1 hour recitation weekly
Course Objectives
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of engineers in society, reflect on the role of engineered products and systems in serving humanity, and distinguish between different engineering disciplines.
- Develop a plan to progress through one’s engineering education, using resources in the college and broader engineering community.
- Function effectively in teams to solve and present engineering problems.
- Apply a structured design process to develop a component, system, or process according to specified requirements using concepts of creativity and invention.
- Recognize ethical issues, state one's own perspective, and apply alternative ethical perspectives in the context of the engineering profession.
- Use collaborative online tools to generate engineering project documentation for the communication of technical material via both oral and written modes.
- Solve engineering problems in the context of a design process by applying innovative thought, scientific principles, analytical skills, and software tools.
- Choose and utilize appropriate technological tools (hardware and/or software) for engineering analysis, design, collaboration, and project management.
- Apply strategies of inquiry and exploration to find, evaluate, and use information ethically in the context of engineering problem-solving and decision-making.
