BIO 350 Cave Biology
This course will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of cave biology. Specifically, students will learn about the biodiversity, biogeographic distributions, and evolutionary pathways observed within cave fauna. Students will examine in detail interspecific species interactions, community structure, and ecosystem dynamics across subterranean environments. While global trends will be discussed, emphasis will be placed on regional systems in Kentucky, such as Mammoth Cave. As a field course, students will also learn how to safely explore cave systems and implement specialized research techniques that prioritize conservation of these vulnerable habitats.
