ENGL 195 Introduction to Linguistics

Students will be introduced to the relationship between language structures and meaning. They will explore, research, and analyze major areas of linguistics, its social significance, its universality, diversity, and complexity.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply core concepts in linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics in order to search and organize linguistic data.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and/or consider alternatives in linguistic inquiry.
  3. Conduct contrastive analysis and evaluation of linguistic datasets.
  4. Apply tools, techniques, and skills for linguistic analysis in various contexts.
