EDUC 294 Special Education Assessment Part II Birth-12th Grade
This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills in assessment, administration, interpretation, programming and alignment of test data with teaching standards. Trends in informal assessment will be explored. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Assessment, Diagnosis, and Prescriptive Techniques requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, Elementary/Middle School, and Secondary/Adult.

Course Objectives
- Understand trends and issues related to assessment in special education.
- Define basic terminology used in assessment.
- Identify appropriate use and limitations of each type of assessment instrument.
- Demonstrate appropriate application and interpretation of assessment.
- Use multiple types of assessment information for a variety of educational decisions including decisions in the areas of eligibility determination, IEP development, monitoring progress, instruction, and adaptations in the classroom.
- Explain and evaluate typical procedures used for screening, pre-referral, and determination.
- Describe the importance and process of collaboration in the interpretation of data and information from teachers, other professionals, individuals with exceptionalities, and parents to make or suggest appropriate adaptations in learning environments and instruction.
- Demonstrate the ability to create and maintain records.
- Collaborate with families and other professionals involved in the assessment of individuals with exceptional learning needs to assure culturally sensitive, non-biased, meaningful assessments and decision making.
