HEAL 110 The Health Care Professional
The role of the health care professional is explored and includes an overview of careers in the health care system. Common issues to be studied include environmental health concerns, infection control, legal and ethical trends, and professional responsibility. A major focus will include medical terminology and application of professional practices to both hospital and pre-hospital environments. Communication skills will include the effect of interpersonal relationships and the impact of working with diverse populations. Computerization and the use of technology in the health care field will be explored.

Course Objectives
- 1. Compare the roles of members of a health care team in the community or
prehospital environment, acute care and long term care settings. - 2. Use medical terminology in reviewing case studies and documenting simulated
events. - 3. Apply therapeutic communication techniques to effectively meet the physical and
psychological aspects of health care. - 4. Discuss professional, legal and ethical issues governing practice.
- 5. Examine the delivery of health care services in relationship to public health and
safety. - 6. Analyze potential causes and effects of stress for the health care provider and
demonstrate intervention techniques. - 7. Identify stages of growth and development across the life span
- 8. Discuss diversity and multicultural perspectives.
- 9. Define Standard Precautions and discuss the implications for medical and surgical
asepsis within the health care setting. Explore the Occupational Safety and Health
Act guidelines as the standard for protection of health care providers. - 10. Describe equipment and special procedures being introduced to the health care
delivery system with advances in technology. - 11. Analyze treatment priorities when responding with first aid or as triage to a mass
casualty incident in the community.
