DHYG 208 Dental Materials

This course will discuss the purpose and use of dental materials used in dentistry. Topics will include the physical, chemical, biological, and mechanical properties of dental materials. Discussed will be resins, bases, amalgam, cements, impression materials, and pit and fissure sealants. Students will learn the principles and application of expanded duties for the registered dental hygienist.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Discuss the specific locations of all six cavity classifications and the appropriate
    restorative material to be used for each.
  2. 2. Name the three types of primary bonds, and describe the differences between them.
  3. 3. Analyze the physical and mechanical properties of dental materials.
  4. 4. Discuss adhesive materials and dental cements as used in dentistry.
  5. 5. Explain the process of direct polymeric restorative materials used in dentistry.
  6. 6. Demonstrate the uses and procedures for using impression materials, diagnostic models,
    diagnostic casts and dies, and alginate impression materials.
  7. 7. List the indications and contraindications for dental implants, materials used for dental
    implants, and maintenance of dental implants.
  8. 8. List the different materials used in specialty dental practices such as: Orthodontics,
    Endodontic, Prosthodontics and Oral Surgery.
  9. 9. Discuss the clinical detection and management of dental restorative materials during
    scaling and polishing.
  10. 10. Evaluate and document the appearance of dental materials in radiographs.
  11. 11. Demonstrate to competency alginate impressions and pouring of dental models.
  12. 12. Demonstrate to competency night guard and bleaching tray fabrication.
