CARD 261 Clinical Internship
Practicum in a clinical setting. Students will refine clinical skills by active participation in a cardiovascular department. Opportunity will also be provided for observation in alternative sites for technologists in the field. On-campus seminar session includes opportunity for case study presentations relative to the field of invasive cardiovascular technology.
Hours Weekly
4 hours clinical weekly
Course Objectives
- 1. Enter the clinical setting prepared to successfully complete all required clinical objectives as stated in
the clinical manual. - 2. Recognize the causes and prevention of complications in the Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory.
- 3. Identify and describe the major equipment used in the modern Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
- 4. List and describe current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures employed in the Invasive Laboratory
and describe their indications and contraindications. - 5. Perform the functions related to the scrub technologist in a left and right heart catheterization, including
preparing and draping the patient. - 6. Observe and assist the staff technologist during fluoroscopy.
- 7. Calibrate and operate the hemodynamic monitoring equipment during catheterization.
- 8. Effectively set-up and monitor an aortic balloon pump.
- 9. Assess a patient prior to a cardiac procedure.
- 10. Demonstrate the ability to perform a sheath pull without complications.
- 11. Demonstrate the protocol to follow during an emergency setting for a patient that needs to go to the O.R.
- 12. Recognize the causes and how to prevent complications in the invasive cardiac laboratory.
- 13. Demonstrate knowledge in the role of a CVT informing family members and their concerns about your
patient. - 14. Demonstrate the ability to complete advanced cardiac life support calls.
- 15. The student will be able to explain the stated objectives and demonstrate competence in each objective.
- 16. Successfully pass Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- 17. Identify and describe a congenital cardiac anomaly after completing a pediatric cardiology rotation.
- 18. Observe open heart surgery.
