CARD 231 Applied Clinical Practicum

Clinical experience in procedures performed in invasive cardiology. This includes using the equipment, performing tests, and giving patient care as it relates to the cardiovascular area.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Perform the functions related to the scrub technologist in a left and right heart
    catheterization, including preparing and draping the patient.
  2. 2. Observe and assist the staff technologist during fluoroscopy.
  3. 3. Calibrate and operate the hemodynamic monitoring equipment during catheterization.
  4. 4. Explain all phases of stocking the lab with the medical equipment used in the
    catheterization, including catheter supplies, disposable items and medications.
  5. 5. Collect and analyze blood gas samples of oxygenation during right heart catheterization.
  6. 6. Observe and understand how to effectively set-up and monitor an aortic balloon pump.
  7. 7. Perform thermodilution cardiac outputs.
  8. 8. List and describe what and why each type of contrast media is used.
  9. 9. Describe the role of the CVT in the cath lab for this clinical rotation.
  10. 10. Describe the procedure for getting immediate response from the emergency hospital team.
