INDS-120 Materials and Resources for Interior Design

This course is a comprehensive study of textiles, furniture, and interior finish materials. The characteristics, life expectancies, specifications, and methods for estimating the quantities and costs of the materials used in interior design will be covered. Students will learn about the sources of specifications and other information needed to make professional estimates for interior design projects.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Understand the appropriate use of materials and resources in a professional interior design practice.
  2. 2. Recognize current products and manufacturers as well as installation methods and requirements.
  3. 3. Analyze materials based on strengths, weaknesses, availability, and maintenance concerns.
  4. 4. Locate interior design resources, manufacturer’s representatives, fabricators, and suppliers.
  5. 5. Examine working drawings, details, and specifications relative to the appropriate choice of
    materials.
  6. 6. Understand the preparation of probable cost data for selected materials and resources.
  7. 7. Recognize the basic methods for maintaining a functioning interior design library.
  8. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of selecting materials which meet National and
    local building codes and safety standards (flammability).
