INDS-101 Introduction to Interior Design

This course is an overview of the principles and elements of Interior Design. The student will come to recognize the basic skills used by Interior Design professionals. This course will emphasize the development of conceptual and technical skills as well as the creation of an artistic point of view on the part of the student.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Apply the principles of design to spaces.
  2. 2. Identify design elements used in today’s living spaces and lifestyles.
  3. 3. Define the vocabulary and describe the materials used by interior designers.
  4. 4. Demonstrate color and materials selection techniques used by interior design professionals.
  5. 5. Identify styles of furniture and decoration.
  6. 6. Identify and describe popular motifs used in interior design.
  7. 7. Develop listening skills and the interpretation of client requests.
  8. 8. Demonstrate the basic elements of manual drafting techniques and hand lettering.
  9. 9. Apply the proportions of human anatomy to furniture and room design.
  10. 10. Describe the effects of building design and materials on the physical and psychological health of human
    beings.
