ARTT-141 Black-and-White Film Photography I

Students will develop the technical skills required to operate a 35mm film camera, as well as learn the basic elements of photographic composition, lighting, and film and print processing. A 35mm SLR film camera with fully manual controls and a stable tripod suitable for a SLR camera are required.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Operate a fully adjustable 35mm SLR camera.
  2. 2. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in film photography.
  3. 3. Identify what elements constitute effective photographic composition.
  4. 4. Research the works of past or present photographers to enhance photographic knowledge and attain global awareness as it relates to visual art.
  5. 5. Apply the principles of proper exposure in composing and producing photographs under natural lighting.
  6. 6. Identify basic artificial lighting concepts.
  7. 7. Develop black-and-white negatives.
  8. 8. Print black-and-white photographs and apply appropriate darkroom techniques to enhance print quality.
  9. 9. Apply proper photofinishing techniques.
  10. 10. Perform basic maintenance on camera equipment.
  11. 11. Analyze and critique personal and peer photographs.
  12. 12. Develop a portfolio of photographs that demonstrates mastery of the course objectives.
