HIST-218 History of Southeast Asia
This course covers the major features of the development of Southeast Asia's history from prehistoric times up to the formation of modern nation states of the area. The course will include a detailed study of Southeast Asia's geography and its impact on the area's cultures. The course will cover the major trends of Southeast Asia's history; early cultures and civilizations, spread of Christianity and Islam, early European contacts, impact of neo-imperialism, World War II, decolonization following World War II, and the current status of Southeast Asian nation states.

Course Objectives
- 1. Identify the major geographical and climatological features and regions of Southeast Asia
- 2. Describe the theories on human origins and their spread in Southeast Asia
- 3. Summarize the characteristics of the major civilizations of the area, such as Cambodia,
Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. - 4. Analyze the reasons for Islam’s spread to this area
- 5. Analyze and summarize the various contacts with Arabic and European explorers
- 6. Analyze the causes of the new imperialism as it was implemented in that area
- 7. Evaluate the various forms of imperial influence and rule during the late nineteenth and early
to mid-twentieth century - 8. Analyze and evaluate the processes of decolonization and creation of nation states
- 9. Describe and analyze the political, cultural, and economic features of some of the modern
nation states of that area - 10. Evaluate the influence of western culture and Asian culture on Southeast Asia
- 11. Evaluate the influence of Southeast Asia on world culture
- 12. Deliver a formal presentation in class on an assigned topic relevant to the subject
