HIST-216 History of the Indian Subcontinent

This course will cover the major features of the development of the Indian subcontinent's history from prehistoric times up to the formation of the modern nation states. The course will include a detailed study of the subcontinent's geography and its impact on its various cultures, to include India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. The course will focus on the major historical trends, such as early cultures and civilizations, spread of Buddhism. Hinduism and Islam, early European contacts, impact of neo-imperialism, decolonization following World War II, and the current status of the various nation-states.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify the major geographical features and regions of the Indian subcontinent
  2. 2. Summarize the characteristics of the major civilizations of the subcontinent, such as
    Harrapa, Mohenjo Dara, the Aryan migration, and evaluate them as civilizations compared to other iknown ones
    at the time.
  3. 3. Describe the various Indian contacts with Arabic and European explorations and invasions and assess the
    contributions and problems each made to the other
  4. 4. Analyze the causes and results of European imperialism
  5. 5. Describe the various forms of imperial influence and rule of the subcontinent during the nineteenth and early
    to mid-twentieth century and evaluate the effect on the dominated society
  6. 6. Describe the processes of decolonization and creation of nation states and Gandhi’s role
  7. 7. Describe the political, cultural, and economic features of some of the modern nation states
  8. 8. Analyze and evaluate the current challenges and conflicts of the area
