GEOG-901 Global Resource Management
This course will take an interdisciplinary approach to global resource management. The concepts of sustainable development and resource management will be introduced and considered in relation to ecological resources, energy resources and cultural heritage. These environmental and cultural resources have a reflexive relationship and will be studied as such. Theories and methodologies from a variety of disciplines will be combined to enable a holistic and empathetic understanding of a variety of issues surrounding global resource management. Key case studies could include the cultural and environmental management of rainforests, carbon offsetting and the greenhouse effect, and the management and protection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Interdisciplinary methodologies (e.g. Repko 2008) will be discussed as a way of integrating disciplinary knowledge. Toward the end of the course, students will examine the Howard Community College campus and the projected future development of the site to understand the ways in which the college as an environmental and cultural resource is managed and potentially could be improved.
