NURS 143 Concepts of Nursing
Concepts from the biophysical, psychosocial, and nursing domains are explored in this course as students assess and intervene to promote health for adult patients. Nursing care is focused on the restoration of optimal function using the nursing process and evidence-based practices to assist students to apply theory to practice, formulate nursing judgments, and develop competencies to provide safe, patient-centered care. Clinical, skills laboratory, and simulation experiences will supplement didactic learning methods.
Hours Weekly
5 hours theory, 9 hours clinical
Course Objectives
- Implement patient-centered care that addresses the patient’s health needs while respecting their culture, preferences, and values.
- Educate patients using individualized teaching plans to promote optimum health and reduce risk potential.
- Collaborate with patients and interprofessional team members to promote continuity of care.
- Utilize effective communication techniques in the coordination and implementation of the patient’s plan of care.
- Demonstrate leadership and accountability by applying an ethical decision making framework to examine ethical dilemmas.
- Utilize standards of practice, policies, and procedures to provide nursing care.
- Apply knowledge of the sciences to make nursing judgments while providing care to patients.
- Apply concepts of evidence-based practice to examine a nursing practice question of interest.
