DHYG 200 Dental Hygiene Theory and Clinic III
This course is a continuation of dental hygiene clinic II. Students will have the opportunity to apply knowledge; more advanced prophylactic procedures and advanced clinical techniques in the treatment of difficult clinical cases, and management of patients with special needs, pain, and anxiety. Students will be introduced to topics of pain management. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to successfully administer local anesthesia for the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Students will perform dental hygiene services under the direct supervision of a supervising dentist.

2 hours theory, 12 hours clinical weekly
Course Objectives
- Continue with the process of developing a student dental hygiene portfolio to include overall and professional goals for the future.
- In the clinical portion of this course, collect, analyze, investigate, and record information from a patient’s personal, dental and medical health history and identify need for medical collaboration to develop an individualized dental hygiene care plan including oral hygiene instructions.
- Identify characteristics of patients who present with special needs and define terms and concepts as they relate to these needs.
- Plan and document adaptations to dental hygiene care plans and oral hygiene instructions for patients who have a physical or sensory impairment, developmental or behavioral disorder.
- Describe specific needs of patients with specific oral conditions related to specific systemic conditions and patients that require care in an alternative practice setting.
- Identify the fundamentals of pain management and anxiety in patients who present with fear and anxiety and develop strategies to help patients cope.
- Discuss the neuroanatomy and physiology of pain control, and basic pharmacological principles of topical and injectable anesthetics.
- Assess patients and develop treatment plans for delivery of local anesthetics.
- Describe the fundamentals of topical and injectable anesthetic administration.
- Demonstrate to competency levels the administration of topical and local anesthesia injections for maxillary and mandibular pain control.
- Demonstrate to competency level the following: advanced root instrumentation, mechanical instrumentation, coronal polishing techniques, care of the dental appliances, fluoride application, and treatment relevant to the patient’s needs.
- In the clinical portion of this course, complete to competency level the completed appointment and treatment of various patient difficulty levels, periodontal classifications, and special case type patients.
- Begin the development of a comprehensive periodontal or medically compromised patient case study for presentation.
