TVRD 255 Television and Radio Portfolio Assessment

This course is designed to prepare advanced radio/television students for job entry and transfer institutions by creating a portfolio including a body of audiovisual work, resume, and professional biography. Students will work with an instructor throughout the semester to build this portfolio of accumulated work from classes and personal projects. The student's working portfolio will be periodically reviewed with strengths, deficiencies, and omissions noted and revisions required as necessary. Students will also learn about the process of presenting themselves in job and school interviews and applications. At the end of the class, students will have an exit portfolio review where they receive a final assessment of their portfolio submissions, interview skills, and transfer applications. This course is to be taken in the student's last semester or second-to-last semester before graduation or transfer.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify the strengths and weaknesses in one’s own body of work.
  2. 2. Select and compile a collection of the student’s best reel/audio samples for future use in
    applications to jobs, universities, grants and scholarships, fellowships, conferences, and other
    professional opportunities.
  3. 3. Write a professional biography as it relates to the student’s skills and career goals in
    radio/television.
  4. 4. Prepare a detailed professional resume including work history and technical skills in the field of
    radio/television.
  5. 5. Create and refine a professional website which houses the student’s best audio/video work,
    biography, resume, and other materials highlighting the student’s abilities and career goals.
  6. 6. Tailor his or her portfolio selections and other professional materials to meet the quality and
    content expectations of appropriate transfer institutions, career opportunities, and other
    purposes.
  7. 7. Present an exit portfolio that represents the student’s degree of mastery of all TVRD courses
    taken at Howard Community College as well as discuss his or her work in an exit interview
    with TVRD faculty.
