TVRD-261 Radio Documentary and Talk Show Production

This advanced course concentrates on information-based talk radio and the art of radio documentary production. Students will produce a public radio-style documentary and a hostguest two way interview in studio. Students will hone their production skills and get advanced experience in show research, booking guests, field and studio recording, interview skills, writing scripts, voicing narration, and audio editing.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Listen to, analyze, criticize, and deconstruct national radio documentaries and public radiostyle
    talk shows.
  2. 2. Identify trends and styles of current talk and documentary radio programming.
  3. 3. Conduct in-depth show research and book multiple guests.
  4. 4. Operate field recording equipment at an advanced level and field record multiple interviews,
    and gather multiple ambient sound recordings.
  5. 5. Discuss stories that have international, national, and local themes.
  6. 6. Utilize narrative arc, character development, effective ambient sound, and evocative writing
    of tracks to produce a professional radio documentary.
  7. 7. Write, revise, and voice a complex radio script.
  8. 8. Conduct an hour-long interview in studio and edit for air.
  9. 9. Work with Adobe Audition in advanced multi-track session to mix and produce final
    documentary.
