PTAP-210 Fundamentals of Practice II
This course provides an introduction to physical disabilities and community barriers. Independent activities of daily living, prosthetics, orthotics, static/dynamic splints, casts, and braces will be discussed. Also included will be relaxation training, pulmonary function, airway clearance techniques, breathing exercises, functional assessment, functional exercise, balance assessment, and balance training.

2 hours lecture, 3 hours lab weekly
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify physical barriers that exist in the home and community.
- 2. Discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act and accessibility guidelines.
- 3. Describe wheelchair components and practice wheelchair skill training.
- 4. Discuss the etiology and management of amputations.
- 5. Demonstrate interventions skills for the care of an amputee.
- 6. Discuss the physical therapy management of pulmonary dysfunction.
- 7. Demonstrate pulmonary treatment interventions and assessment skills that are within the
scope of a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). - 8. Demonstrate assessment of and interventions for improvement of daily function.
- 9. Apply the principles of the use and fit of prosthetics, orthotics, static/dynamic splints, casts, and
braces. - 10. Apply the principles of relaxation training to patient care.
- 11. Demonstrate intervention and assessment skills in the management of vascular disorders that
are within the scope of a PTA. - 12. Demonstrate balance assessment.
- 13. Implement a balance training program, as outlined in a plan of care.
