HIST-232 History of the Modern Middle East
This course is a survey of the history of the Modern Middle East from the Napoleonic Era to the present day. Students will be able to describe the political, economic, and cultural development of the Modern Middle East and the emergence of a society that blends a series of diverse cultural, religious, and political traditions. This course will analyze the impact of European imperialism and World War I on the history of the Modern Middle East and also consider the historical influences that have created contemporary problems and challenges in the present era.

Course Objectives
- 1. Engage in an exploration of Middle Eastern worldviews and their relationship with European worldviews.
- 2. Describe Middle Eastern cultures and values, views on human nature, aesthetics, and ethics in a reflective manner.
- 3. Identify and explain the numerous different perspectives within the Modern Middle East and how they were impacted by outside influences.
- 4. Analyze events in the history of the Modern Middle East within a global context from economic, political, environmental, aesthetic, social, or ethical perspectives.
- 5. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
- 7. Formulate specific, unified and concise theses through writing that demonstrate an understanding of historical thinking.
- 8. Explain the sequence and characteristics of the major civilizations of the historical Middle East.
- 9. Explain the impact of European Imperialism and World War I on the history of the Modern Middle East.
- 10. Explain the historical problems that have shaped the Modern Middle East.
