FYEX-120 Introduction to Career Development and Decision Making

This course provides a setting for students to systematically examine the skills required to make effective career decisions and formulate life goals. Through a process of self-assessment and exploration of career information resources, students will consider career possibilities and develop a probable career choice.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Assess, identify, and clarify interests, values, personality preferences, skills, and abilities as
    they relate to career choice and the world of work.
  2. 2. Synthesize interests, values, personality preferences, skills, and abilities in order to select
    potential career options.
  3. 3. Compile research findings about selected potential career and education options in today’s
    labor market and work world.
  4. 4. Communicate, in writing and through oral and visual presentation, highlights/summaries of
    findings.
  5. 5. Use campus resources and programs to further explore education, internship, and
    employment possibilities.
  6. 6. Create a professional portfolio to include a finished resume and sample cover letter.
  7. 7. Research the impact and importance of technology and social media in today’s job market.
  8. 8. Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to build a professional network.
  9. 9. Create a career and educational plan detailing steps toward finding and/or reaching your
    career goal(s) over the next 5 years.
  10. 10. Demonstrate effective interviewing and interpersonal skills.
