ENGL-096 Fundamentals of Academic Reading
In ENGL-096, students will develop proficiency in comprehending and interpreting a variety of college level reading materials. The course emphasis is academic reading as a holistic, dynamic, interactive process. Students will develop an understanding of this process by practicing and mastering various reading strategies. The course will include two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of reading lab.

Course Objectives
- 1. Evaluate, interpret and synthesize information from a variety of sources including college textbooks,
periodicals, literature and electronic media sources. - 2. Comprehend the literal meaning of text by identifying the topic, stating the main idea, and locating
supporting details. - 3. Make logical inferences based on materials read.
- 4. Evaluate readings by identifying the authors' tone, purpose, point of view and bias.
- 5. Demonstrate active reading strategies.
- 6. Apply appropriate strategies in order to assess reading tasks, to complete assignments and to evaluate their
own comprehension. - 7. Respond in writing to text in a variety of ways.
- 8. Demonstrate information literacy skills by locating and using source information effectively and
appropriately. - 9. Summarize clearly and accurately.
- 10. Demonstrate enhanced global awareness and appreciation for diversity.
- 11. Expand their reading, writing and oral vocabularies using context clues, structural analysis, and by learning
an assigned set of vocabulary words.
- 12. Increase reading speed while improving comprehension.
- 13. Participate in collaborative learning.
