EDUC-290 Special Education General Methods Birth-12th Grade
Students will understand and use a variety of organizational, teaching, and classroom management strategies. The course will focus on effective practices in different settings with all disability groups, as well as collaboration with other involved professionals and parents. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Curriculum and Methodology of Instruction requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, Elementary/Middle School, and Secondary/Adult.

Course Objectives
- 1. Explain the development of special education and who is responsible for its
implementation. - 2. Define inclusion and explain and the current implementation practices.
- 3. Use a variety of age, learning-style, and disability appropriate strategies and techniques.
- 4. Plan and prepare for classes with diverse student needs.
- 5. Explain methods of managing student behavior and promote social acceptance.
- 6. Explain record-keeping procedures for student progress and communication with other
involved professionals, as well as students’ families. - 7. Plan a classroom environment with appropriate modifications and accommodations for
all students. - 8. Describe how to work and plan with other professionals and families involved in the
education of students with special needs.
