DHYG-257 Dental Hygiene Ethics and Jurisprudence
This course will discuss basic ethical principles, ethical problem-solving methods, and the ethics of the American Dental Hygienist Association.

Course Objectives
- 1. Contrast a right with a duty and a right with a privilege.
- 2. Identify the core values found in the Code of Ethics of the American Dental Hygienists’
Association. - 3. Compare the ethical principles found in code of ethics, informed consent, patients’ bill of
rights, and other documents related to patient care. - 4. Solve ethical dilemmas using a decision-making process.
- 5. Compare the concepts of criminal law and the laws regarding dental hygiene.
- 6. Recognize the signs of abuse (child, spouse, elderly) and reporting procedures.
- 7. Interpret the aspects of practice management in a dental office.
- 8. Discuss the role of the dental hygienist as related to the business of dentistry and time
management. - 9. Differentiate the different roles and practices of the dental hygienist.
- 10. Prepare for the role of dental hygienist by developing a resume, interview techniques and
job searching skills. - 11. Devise a plan for long term success as a dental hygienist.
