CHEM-201 Organic Chemistry I

CHEM-201 is a course designed mainly for science majors and pre-professional students. It will enable students to answer questions and solve problems involving structure, nomenclature, physical properties, synthesis, reactions, and mechanisms for a variety of organic compounds. These will include, but not be limited to, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, cycloalkenes, dienes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and multifunctional group aliphatic compounds. It will also introduce students to spectroscopic methods including IR, UV-VIS, MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. In the laboratory, students will acquire skills in laboratory techniques, prepare organic compounds, study their properties, and interpret data collected to identify unknowns.
