CFS 225 Food, Culture and Society

Prerequisites: GSTR 210 or permission of instructor

Offered: Typically every Fall Term

Students engage in the study of the relationship between culture and food traditions: how each shapes the other and how this relationship has varied over time and across the globe. Students gain insights into the contributions of anthropology, archaeology, sociology, technology, and history to our knowledge about food. Through selected readings, class discussions, group projects, the use of artifacts, interviews, field trips, personal reflections, and other engaging activities, we will explore the meaning and significance of food, how individual and group identities are expressed through food traditions, and how food choice and experiences are shaped by family, class, location, gender, religion, race, and identity. World Culture (Western) component of the International Perspective. Course Fee: $15. 1 Course Credit
