HIST 232 History of the Modern Middle East

This course is a survey of the history of the Modern Middle East from the Napoleonic Era to the present day. Students will be able to describe the political, economic, and cultural development of the Modern Middle East and the emergence of a society that blends a series of diverse cultural, religious, and political traditions. This course will analyze the impact of European imperialism and World War I on the history of the Modern Middle East and also consider the historical influences that have created contemporary problems and challenges in the present era.

1. Describe an issue in the history of the Modern Middle East and its legacy from a global perspective.
2. Discuss how human experience in the Modern Middle East is shaped by global forces.
3. Analyze the interconnectedness of global events in the context of the history of the Modern Middle East.
4. Analyze and evaluate the ways in which the history of the Modern Middle East informs the political, cultural, and/or social issues of World Civilization.
5. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
6. Employ historical concepts, methods, and/or theories to understand change over time.
