EDUC 140 Child Health, Safety and Nutrition
This course will examine the health, safety, and nutritional needs of young children in the child care setting. Attention will be directed to the study of common childhood illnesses, prevention of illness through personal and environmental hygiene, good safety practices, and nutritious snacks and meals, all within the context of child care settings.

Course Objectives
- Assess a child's health status through a health inspection.
- Identify the symptoms and means of transmission of communicable diseases affecting children.
- Recognize chronic health problems and discuss their impact on overall health.
- Identify important safety and hygiene practices in a childcare setting.
- Identify common childhood accidents and injuries.
- Identify the signs of child abuse and know how to report.
- Describe the nutritional needs of the preschool child and plan snacks and meals to meet
those needs. - Inspect classroom health records (health appraisal, immunization record, and
emergency card) for compliance with regulations. - Maintain accident reports and medication records.
- Apply knowledge of community resources to address the specific health needs and
problems of children.
