HMGT 166 Social Event and Wedding Management
This course focuses on the unique management requirements of social events and weddings, with an emphasis on starting and managing an event management business. Course topics include an exploration of special events in different cultures, event theme and decor, lighting and visual effects, attire, vendors and entertainers, and day-of-event logistics.

Course Objectives
- Identify and describe the many different types of social, religious, and celebratory events, with an emphasis on the importance of events across different cultures.
- Discuss the requirements for successful startup and management of a small business, including liability issues, marketing, time management, compensation, client relations, and staffing models.
- Explain the steps needed to create the special event theme, and research and select decor aspects that support the event theme while controlling for time, budget, and logistical impact of decor elements on the overall event experience.
- Determine vendor and entertainment needs for a special event and explore the principles of entertainment and vendor sourcing, management, and production aspects.
- Describe the impact of audiovisual elements as well as current visual and special effects trends on a special event, including lighting, audio, visual, and video components.
- Explore the role of attire in a special event; compare and contrast reception dress codes such as black tie, white tie, and business dress.; and discuss current trends in bridal and formal attire for wedding parties.
- Develop logistical plans for the day of the event that will improve the client and guest experience, including a run of show, reception seating chart, music selections, photographer shot list, and transportation plan.
