FILM 172 Introduction to World Cinema
This course focuses on the thematic and technical concerns of international film. It is an overview of world cinema with films from countries including Russia, France, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, South Africa, Uganda, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Iran, India, Spain, Senegal, and other countries on a rotating basis.

Course Objectives
- Engage in a cinematic exploration of various worldviews.
- Describe history, cultures, values, and aesthetics of self and others through the cinema of Russia, France, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, South Africa, Uganda, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Iran, India, Spain and Senegal.
- Identify and explain multiple perspectives when exploring subjects within and across cultures and how the sociology of films gives a microcosmic view of the modern world.
- Analyze global events and issues through the cinema of Russia, France, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, South Africa, Uganda, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Iran, India, Spain and Senegal and their interconnectedness from philosophical and social perspectives.
- Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of aesthetics, creativity, humanism, meaning, and/or invention in world cinema.
- Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods through an analysis of post-modernist cinematic techniques such as post-modernist absurdity and melodrama in world cinema.
- Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative and humanistic expression with social and cultural contexts by focuses on the thematic and technical concerns of international film.
- Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of international film in illuminating the human condition and search for meaning.
