ENGL 200 Children's Literature
Children's Literature examines the historical background and development of works written for young people. Students are presented with criteria for assessing both text and illustrations of classic and contemporary works written for diverse audiences of children and young adults with a strong focus on terminology and a variety of genres. This course is writing intensive.

Course Objectives
- Identify and apply literary terms, concepts, critical strategies for literary analysis, and stylistic characteristics in the texts studied.
- Apply appropriate literary criticism (perspectives) for effective literary analysis.
- Use evidence from literary texts and secondary texts to compose original and insightful literary analysis.
- Pose questions and analyze themes that reflect the human condition, such as history, ideology, and the evolving ideas about humanity and the rise of individualism.
- Analyze how literature reflects human values and thus has relevance to today's world.
- Write analytically about literary works, using appropriate research and documentation.
- Communicate effectively an understanding of the literature and exchange ideas with others.
- Examine how diversity and multiculturalism is represented in children's literature and modern adaptations of traditional literature.
- Apply specific criteria for selecting, evaluating, and reviewing children's books for different age levels, with consideration of excellence in both text and illustration.
