EMSP 248 Special Needs Patients
Students will be able to integrate anatomy, physiology, developmental considerations, and pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the treatment plan for neonatal, newborn, pediatric, toddler, school-aged, adolescent, and obstetrical, gynecological, and geriatric patients. In addition, patients who are physically or mentally challenged, chronically ill patients, and patients with common complaints will be examined for their unique special needs. Students must maintain licensure as a Nationally Registered EMT-I99 (Maryland CRT 99) for the duration of the course and during Paramedic testing.
Hours Weekly
4 hours weekly
Course Objectives
- Apply the anatomy and physiology of the normal female reproductive system and the female
reproductive system during pregnancy. - Apply the anatomy and physiology of the growth of a fetus and landmarks for assessment of
the fetus during pregnancy. - Synthesize a treatment plan based on the signs, symptoms, and pathophysiology of a:
a. threatened, imminent, or complete pre-term miscarriage.
b. normal delivery of a full-term fetus.
c. post-partum female. - Synthesize a treatment plan for a home delivery and interaction with family members,
midwives, or other trained members of the community based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology of the obstetrical patient and fetus. - Apply the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of a neonate.
- Synthesize a treatment plan for a poorly responsive, ill, or pulseless neonate based on the signs,
symptoms, and pathophysiology - Apply and understand the anatomy, physiology, and development of a pediatric patient.
- Compare the anatomy of a pediatric patient to that of an adult.
- Synthesize a treatment plan for a pediatric patient based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology of:
a. specific system complaints.
b. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
c. any apparent life-threatening event. - Assess and manage the pediatric patient in an appropriate manner so as to reduce patient and
caregiver anxiety. - Apply the anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, and progression of the geriatric patient.
- Synthesize a treatment plan for a geriatric patient based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology of specific system complaints. - Synthesize a treatment plan for a geriatric patient based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology in an end-of-life setting.
- Value social, communication, and family concerns by incorporating them into the assessment
and treatment plan for a geriatric patient. - Synthesize a treatment plan for an abused or neglected patient based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology or patterns of injury or illness. - Synthesize a safe treatment plan for a bariatric patient based on signs, symptoms, and
pathophysiology or patterns of injury or illness. - Synthesize a safe treatment plan for a technologically dependent patient based on signs,
symptoms, and pathophysiology or patterns of injury or illness.
