ARTS 110 Art Appreciation

Previously ARTT 103. The overall purpose of this course is to encourage an appreciation of Western Art. This is a highly visual course in which students will examine and discuss works of art from the prehistoric to the contemporary periods. Students will look at and analyze many images in order to gain an understanding of their form and content. Students will analyze the formal structure of various works of art as well as consider them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the vocabulary of art and its application.
  2. Understand the elements and principles of design within art making.
  3. Recognize the material and process involved in the production of a work of art.
  4. Discuss art in a historical and cultural context, identifying the functionality of art and the artist.
  5. Apply learned concepts to the visual understanding of works of art in museums.
  6. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts to contemporary issues of aesthetics, creativity, meaning, and invention within the arts.
  7. Demonstrate a hands-on understanding for the creative process by incorporating innovation, problem-solving, and risk-taking through art-making.
  8. Pose and address questions related to creative expression and the influential effects art has on global cultures and societies.
  9. Through assessment and reflection, critically analyze the role of the creative process, evaluating the impact creative expression and aesthetic has on art and illuminating the human condition.
