ARTS 102 Three-Dimensional Art and Design

Previously ARTT 102. This course focuses on the elements of art and principles of design as they relate to form and space. Using traditional and non-traditional materials as well as newer technologies, students will explore three-dimensional design as it relates to physical and virtual space. Through problem-solving, the exploration of linear and non-linear connections, and the fabrication of unique works of three-dimensional art, students will increase their conceptual understanding of artwork as a cross-cultural expression of the human condition.

Course Objectives

  1. Produce original art in three-dimensions that shows the understanding of fundamental design principles with an emphasis on form and space.
  2. Produce original art that effectively uses the materials and visual organization to convey the intended concept and expression.
  3. Describe the interaction between forms as they exist in an array of spaces. Apply those concepts to the creation of three-dimensional artwork.
  4. Describe the relationship between viewer and forms in space and apply those concepts to the creation of three-dimensional artwork.
  5. Identify the critical theories, specialized vocabulary and concepts of the elements of art, and the principles of design and apply them to issues of aesthetics and creativity in historic and contemporary three-dimensional fine art, craft, and commercial artwork.
  6. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into the analytical and problem-solving methodologies of the creative process from ideation to completion.
  7. Engage in informed discourse about and critical assessment of three-dimensional artwork arising from individual creative expression, personal significance, and the social and cultural context under which an artwork is created.
  8. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of three-dimensional artwork as an expression of the human condition.
