MUSC 111A Music Theory II

This is the second in the four-semester Music Theory sequence required of music majors. Together with MUSC 111P, Ear Training and Musicianship II, and MUSC 115, Keyboard Skills II, this course continues the integrated approach introduced in Theory I. Selected topics include functional harmony, harmonic spacing and doubling, chord connection, cadences, modulating, seventh chords, melody and bass writing, and introduction to binary and ternary forms.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Analyze a set of 10 diatonic seventh chords in various keys at 90% accuracy within two
   minutes and 45 seconds.
   
2. 2. Analyze musical excerpts which contain modulations to closely related keys, secondary
   dominants, and leading tone sevenths.
3. 3. Identify binary and ternary form.
4. 4. Harmonize a melody showing a proper understanding of voice leading and harmonic progression.
   
5. 5. Realize a figured bass which includes a modulation to a closely related key and includes at least
   one dominant seventh chord.
