ENGL 208 Contemporary Poetry

This course focuses on conventions and characteristics of contemporary poetry and poets' creative process. Students study terminology and literary concepts in order to interpret, analyze and critically evaluate poems written from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present. In addition, they are introduced to critical reading strategies, literary criticism, and an expanding literary canon which includes the work of culturally diverse poets. This course is writing intensive.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify and apply literary terms, concepts, devices, and characteristics in contemporary poetry.
  2. 2. Apply appropriate literary criticism (perspectives) for effective literary analysis of poems.
  3. 3. Use evidence from literary texts and secondary texts to compose original and insightful literary analysis.
  4. 4. Pose questions and analyze themes that reflect the human condition, such as economic, ethical, historical, personal, political, and/or social issues discovered in poetry.
  5. 5. Analyze how poetry reflects human values and thus has relevance to today's world.
  6. 6. Write analytically about poetry, using appropriate research and documentation.
  7. 7. Identify and discuss characteristics of contemporary poetry, from multiple perspectives and in various cultural, historical, and literary contexts.
  8. 8. Read poetry (silently and aloud) more effectively with an appreciation for the sound and rhythm of words.
  9. 9. Communicate effectively an understanding of the development of contemporary poetry and exchange ideas with others.
  10. 10. Create original poems using structural, thematic, and/or stylistic models of master poets.
