EDUC 212 Advanced Methods and Materials in Early Childhood Education

The student will integrate the early childhood activities presented in EDUC 112 with daily program planning and overall curriculum goals. The course will emphasize webbing, collecting and preparing a variety of activities and materials using the Project Approach to Planning.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Write lesson plans that integrate the various areas of the early childhood
    curriculum.
  2. 2. Plan and write up a project for a class of young children in correct format,
    implementing developmentally appropriate practice.
  3. 3. Discuss how developmentally appropriate practices are the basis of an effective
    early childhood program.
  4. 4. Develop awareness of and resources for anti-bias / multicultural programming for
    young children.
  5. 5. Develop awareness of and plan an activity for a pro-social curriculum.
  6. 6. Prepare activities and materials that incorporate the development of language and
    emergent literacy in all curriculum areas.
  7. 7. Discuss how concept development is integrated in the early childhood curriculum.
  8. 8. Discuss the importance of play as it relates to active learning in the early
    childhood curriculum.
  9. 9. Define creativity and list ways that teachers can help children express themselves
    creatively.
  10. 10. Prepare art materials and equipment, and describe the techniques and strategies
    involved in a creative art program for young children.
  11. 11. Assemble the materials and demonstrate how to make different puppets and
    discuss the appropriate use of puppets.
  12. 12. List the basic goals of a music and movement program, and develop a music or
    movement activity.
  13. 13. Discuss the use of a prop box in dramatic play, and plan and assemble the
    materials to be included in a prop box.
  14. 14. Collect and prepare supplemental materials for teaching science.
  15. 15. List the basic goals of a math curriculum, and develop a math activity.
  16. 16. Demonstrate age appropriate cooking activities with the use of a recipe chart.
