DMSU 191 Adult Echocardiography I

In this course, students will focus on normal anatomy, scan techniques, cardiac measurement, new dynamics, and case-study presentations. This course includes the cardiovascular assessment techniques (TTE & TEE), physics and ultrasound review, and an introduction to the theoretical and practical principles of basic M-mode exam, and two-dimensional echocardiography examination of the adult heart. This course is required to complete the cardiac concentration of the diagnostic medical sonography program.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Discuss the anatomic structures of the heart and their function related to the cardiovascular system.
  2. 2. Illustrate the blood vessels of the human body from the aorta through body tissues and back to the right
    heart.
  3. 3. Demonstrate the flow of blood through the heart chambers and valves, beginning at the vena cava and
    returning to the heart.
  4. 4. Identify the indications for echocardiography.
  5. 5. Interpret clinical data and test results
  6. 6. Complete patient preparation for the echocardiography examination.
  7. 7. Demonstrate the protocol for each of the basic views of the heart.
  8. 8. Demonstrate proper technique for conducting M-mode tracings of the heart with measurement.
  9. 9. Compare M-mode tracings of the heart with cardiac anatomy.
  10. 10. Demonstrate routine 2D views and protocols for the heart, and compare with cardiac anatomy.
